A recent outbreak of the Nipah virus in the southern Indian state of Kerala has sparked concern as two individuals have tragically lost their lives to this rare and potentially fatal disease. Understanding the Nipah Virus
The Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. However, it can also spread through contaminated food or direct human-to-human contact. Its symptoms initially appear as a headache and drowsiness, progressing rapidly to coma, acute respiratory syndrome, and even fatal encephalitis – a brain inflammation. Currently, there is no vaccine, and treatment options are limited to supportive care.
Kerala’s Response
Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, has issued a plea to residents to exercise caution and adhere to health department guidelines. Over 700 people have been identified as close contacts and are undergoing testing for the virus, with 77 considered at “high risk.” To minimise transmission, several schools in the affected district have been temporarily closed, and certain villages have been designated as “containment zones.”

A History of Nipah Outbreaks
Kerala has witnessed multiple Nipah virus outbreaks since 2018, with the deadliest outbreak claiming 17 lives in that year. The virus’s origin traces back to Malaysia in 1998-1999, where it led to a significant loss of life and prompted the culling of over a million pigs. Subsequent outbreaks occurred in India and Bangladesh, some resulting from human-to-human transmission.
