SC Seeks Delhi Police Response on NewsClick Arrests

SC seeks Delhi Police’s response to NewsClick founder and HR head’s UAPA arrest pleas. The next hearing is on October 30 after the Delhi HC denied relief.

 

The Supreme Court is currently reviewing the pleas of Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty, who are challenging their arrest under the UAPA (Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act). This comes after the Delhi High Court denied them any relief. The Supreme Court has asked the Delhi Police to respond to the petitions filed by Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakravarty, both associated with NewsClick.

Supreme Court Hearing Updates

The next hearing is scheduled for October 30. Earlier, the Supreme Court decided to hear their pleas on October 19. The Delhi High Court had previously rejected their requests against arrest and subsequent police custody. They were arrested by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police on October 3. They had moved the high court to challenge their arrest and the seven-day police custody, seeking immediate release, but the court denied them relief, stating there was no procedural flaw or violation of the provisions of the UAPA in their arrest.

The trial court had sent them to judicial custody for ten days. The Delhi Police has filed cases against both individuals under the UAPA, alleging that they received funds to spread pro-China propaganda. The FIR states that a substantial amount of funding came from China to disrupt India’s sovereignty and create disaffection against the country. It also alleges that Purkayastha conspired with the People’s Alliance for Democracy and Secularism (PADS) to sabotage the electoral process during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
