Delhi’s AQI Declines, Stubble Burning in Haryana Prompts Concern

As the Delhi AQI in the national capital declined to the ‘very poor’ category, there were reports of farmers in Haryana’s Karnal burning stubble in their fields. So far, there have been 48 cases of stubble burning in the state this season, and the Agriculture Department has imposed fines totalling Rs 53,000 on farmers caught burning the stubble.

One of the farmers involved explained, “We are compelled to burn the straw because we need to prepare the land for the next crop, and we’re running out of time. We are aware that burning stubble causes numerous problems.”

In line with their commitment to combat stubble burning, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar stated, “There’s no valid reason to burn stubble, and we will be strict with those who continue to do so if they don’t understand. We will reach out to these farmers, talk to them, and try to make them aware of the consequences.”

Delhi’s AQI: ‘Very Poor

On Sunday, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) was reported at 306, categorized as ‘Very Poor.’ In Gurugram, the AQI fell into the ‘Poor’ category at 283, while Noida’s air quality was also in the ‘Very Poor’ category with an AQI of 308. According to SAFAR, the AQI around Delhi University was extremely bad at 330 around lunchtime, and at Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal T3, the AQI was 313, compared to 276 in the morning hours.
