A detailed Delhi Police murder investigation into the alleged gang rape and murder of a teenage girl in northwest Delhi has highlighted how CCTV footage and a small identifying mark on a tempo helped investigators develop a crucial lead. Police examined footage from more than 50 cameras after the girl’s body was discovered in an open field near Kushak Road in the Swaroop Nagar area.
The case initially presented several challenges. There were reportedly no apparent eyewitnesses, the victim’s identity was not immediately established, and investigators did not initially have a clear identification of the people allegedly involved. The investigation eventually moved forward through technical evidence and field enquiries.
Decomposed Body Found Near Kushak Road
According to police reports, information about a body lying in an open field near Jaipal Rana’s field on Kushak Road was received on September 13. The body was reportedly in an advanced state of decomposition, making immediate identification difficult. Police also said that parts of the body had been eaten by stray dogs and that one hand was found separated from the body.
A subsequent medical examination helped investigators establish that the deceased was a teenage girl. Reports have put her estimated age in the mid-to-late teenage years, although the exact age was initially difficult to establish because the family reportedly did not have documents confirming it.
No Eyewitnesses Made the Investigation Difficult
The investigation began without an obvious eyewitness or a clear suspect. Police also said that the family had not filed a missing-person complaint before the body was discovered. According to reports, the family told investigators that the girl would sometimes leave home and return after several days.
This created another challenge for investigators attempting to establish her movements and identify the people she had been with before her death.
Police subsequently examined the surrounding area and began reconstructing possible movements using available surveillance footage.
CCTV Footage Revealed a Suspicious Tempo
The major breakthrough reportedly came from CCTV footage. Although there was no camera immediately at the location where the body was found, investigators found footage from a nearby area showing a tempo moving around the relevant period. However, darkness and poor visibility meant that its registration number could not initially be read.
Instead of relying on the registration number, investigators reportedly looked for distinctive physical features of the vehicle.
This was where the Tempo symbol became an important investigative clue.
Peculiar Symbol Helped Police Follow the Vehicle
According to NDTV, investigators noticed a peculiar round or ring-like symbol on the left side of the tempo, along with an AC unit attached to the vehicle. Police used these distinctive features to identify the same vehicle as it appeared at different CCTV locations.
The team reportedly followed the tempo’s movement across footage from more than 50 CCTV cameras covering the surrounding roads and adjoining routes.
This approach allowed investigators to reconstruct the vehicle’s route even though the registration number was initially unavailable.
Trail Led Investigators to Khadda Colony
After tracing the suspected vehicle through multiple locations, police reportedly conducted a night-long search operation during the intervening night of September 15 and 16.
The tempo was eventually traced to Khadda Colony in Swaroop Nagar. Investigators identified and questioned the driver, and further questioning reportedly produced additional leads in the case.
Police subsequently apprehended four people, including three juveniles. The adult suspect has been identified in reports as Shivam alias Sudama alias Chuchu, while the three juveniles were reported to be aged 16 and 17.
Police Recover Tempo and Other Evidence
Police have said that two knives, clothing allegedly worn during the incident and the tempo were recovered. The recovered articles have been preserved for forensic examination. Investigators are also examining the individual roles of those apprehended and whether anyone else was involved.
The alleged sequence of events is still being investigated, and police statements regarding the circumstances of the crime are subject to verification through forensic and other evidence.
CCTV Technology’s Role in the Investigation
The case demonstrates how surveillance footage can provide investigative leads even when conventional clues such as eyewitness accounts or readable vehicle registration numbers are unavailable. In this investigation, the combination of 50 CCTV cameras, vehicle movement analysis and the distinctive Tempo symbol reportedly helped police narrow down the vehicle and trace it to Khadda Colony.
The Delhi Police murder investigation remains ongoing, with authorities examining forensic evidence and the individual roles of the four apprehended persons. The allegations will ultimately be tested through the legal process.
