The Puducherry Bypoll Result 2026 has delivered a significant victory for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) candidate Ashok Anand winning the Thattanchavady Assembly by-election by 8,482 votes. The result, declared on October 9, 2026, strengthens the position of Chief Minister N Rangasamy and his party in the Union Territory.

According to the reported final results, Anand won by 8,482 votes. His victory reflects the ruling party’s ability to retain the constituency following the departure of its previous representative.
The by-election attracted attention because Thattanchavady is closely associated with N Rangasamy, the founder of AINRC and the current Chief Minister of Puducherry. The result therefore carries significance beyond the individual constituency, offering an indication of the ruling alliance’s electoral strength.
Why Was the Thattanchavady Assembly By-Election Held?
The Thattanchavady Assembly by-election became necessary after N Rangasamy won two constituencies in the April 2026 Assembly elections: Thattanchavady and Mangalam.
Following his victories, Rangasamy chose to retain the Mangalam Assembly seat and vacated Thattanchavady. This created a vacancy that required a fresh election under the electoral process.
AINRC subsequently fielded Ashok Anand to contest the vacant seat. The by-election became a closely watched political contest between the ruling alliance’s candidate and opposition nominees, particularly those from Congress and the DMK.
For the National Democratic Alliance, retaining the constituency was important because of its association with the Chief Minister and the party’s political standing in Puducherry.

Party-Wise Vote Count in Puducherry Bypoll Result 2026
The final vote count highlights the difference between Ashok Anand and his principal opponents.
- Ashok Anand (AINRC): 13,358 votes
- E Vinayagam (Congress): 4,876 votes
- K Sethu Selvam (DMK): 2,664 votes
- A M Saleem (Communist Party of India): 310 votes
- S Karthikumari (Naam Tamilar Katchi): Approximately 171 votes
The remaining candidates contested against the three leading parties in a constituency where 11 candidates were in the electoral race.
Ashok Anand’s vote tally placed him well ahead of Congress and DMK, establishing a comfortable winning margin. The result also demonstrated the AINRC’s ability to consolidate support in a seat that had previously been represented by its party founder.
Voter Turnout in Thattanchavady Bypoll 2026
Voter turnout was another important aspect of the Thattanchavady Assembly bypoll. The constituency recorded a turnout of 80.81%, with 21,756 voters casting their ballots out of 26,921 eligible electors.
Polling took place on October 6, 2026, across 31 polling stations. The voting process concluded at 6 pm, and the election was reported to have passed off peacefully.
However, turnout was lower than the figure recorded during the April 2026 Assembly elections, when the constituency registered approximately 87.2% polling. The decline indicates a reduction in participation compared with the previous election, although turnout remained above 80%.
The voter turnout figures provide useful context for understanding electoral participation and the political response to the by-election.
