Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) for Women will resume regular offline classes from Thursday, September 24, 2026, following a brief shift to online teaching after an alleged gang-rape incident near Kalkaji Mandir and a subsequent police encounter close to the college campus. The development comes after heightened safety concerns among students, faculty members and the wider college community.
According to a notice issued by the college on September 23, classes will continue in regular offline mode from Thursday at the college premises. The decision follows the temporary suspension of physical classes and the shift to online teaching as a precautionary measure.
Why Did LSR Shift Classes Online?
The decision to temporarily move classes online came after a serious incident reported at Aastha Kunj Park, located near Kalkaji Mandir in South Delhi. A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped inside the park on Monday evening, September 21.
According to police reports cited by multiple news organisations, three men allegedly posed as police personnel before separating the girl from her 17-year-old male friend. The alleged assault reportedly took place in a secluded area of the park. An FIR was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The incident prompted immediate concern in the nearby educational community. LSR, which is located roughly two kilometres from the park according to reports, cancelled regular classes from Tuesday afternoon and decided to conduct classes online on Wednesday.
Police Encounter Near LSR Back Gate
The safety concerns intensified after one of the accused was apprehended near the college. Reports said a brief exchange of fire took place close to LSR’s back gate, with some reports placing the encounter around 50 metres from the campus.
Police said the accused, identified as Asif, allegedly opened fire at a police team during an attempt to apprehend him. Police subsequently fired in response, and Asif sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. A police head constable was reportedly protected by a bulletproof jacket after a round struck it.
Following the incident, the college administration advised students, faculty members and staff not to gather around the back-gate area. The college also sought increased police patrolling around the campus and nearby lanes.
LSR Prioritises Student Safety
The Lady Shri Ram College administration said the safety, security and well-being of students remained its priority. Principal Kanika K. Ahuja said faculty mentors and the college counsellor were also asked to remain available to students who needed support following the incident.
The temporary move to online classes was therefore presented as a precautionary response rather than a long-term closure of the institution.

The LSR Students’ Union also held an emergency online General Body Meeting to discuss safety concerns. According to reports, students raised issues surrounding security around the college perimeter and the need to identify vulnerable stretches used by students on their daily routes.

The Kalkaji Mandir incident has led to wider discussions about safety around public spaces, parks and educational institutions in South Delhi. Police arrested three men in connection with the alleged assault, while investigations into the case continue.
The alleged incident reportedly began after the girl and her male friend visited Kalkaji Mandir and later entered Aastha Kunj Park. Police said the accused allegedly claimed to be police personnel before taking the two into a secluded area. The investigation is ongoing, and allegations against the accused remain subject to the legal process.
Offline Classes To Resume From September 24
With the immediate security situation addressed, LSR has announced that regular offline classes will resume on Thursday, September 24. The announcement means students are expected to return to the college premises after one day of online classes.
The college’s decision follows coordination with authorities and requests for enhanced patrolling around areas adjoining the campus. The focus now remains on maintaining a secure environment for students, faculty and staff as regular academic activities return.
The developments surrounding the Kalkaji Mandir incident, Aastha Kunj Park and the nearby police encounter have placed renewed attention on safety arrangements around educational institutions in Delhi. For LSR students, the return to campus marks the next stage following the precautionary measures taken earlier this week.
