World Population Day Highlights the Urgent Need for Gender Equality and Reproductive Rights

World Population Day Calls for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development for All

July 11 is designated as International Population Day or World Population Day. Its objectives include educating people about gender equality, family planning and reproductive health as well as increasing awareness of global population issues. This day which was created by the UN in 1989 honors the Day of Five Billion which occurred when the global population surpassed five billion people.

World Population Day 2025 is a moment to ask who is still going uncounted and why – and what this costs individuals societies and our global efforts to leave no one behind. It is also a time for us all to pledge to do more to make sure that our data systems fully represent human diversity so that everyone is seen to have the opportunity to exercise their human rights and can realize their full potential.

Theme of World Population Day

In favor of Gender Equality: Stressing how crucial gender equality is to attaining sustainable development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) especially SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being: Promoting access to health services for all are closely related to World Population Day.

Background of World Population Day

World Population Day has a long history dating back to the 1980s. Around five billion people lived on the planet as of July 11, 1987. This day brought resource management, population growth dynamics and sustainable development into the public eye on a global scale.

The Day was created by the UNDP Governing Council in 1989 and is celebrated on July 11 every year. In December 1990 the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) formally established the annual observance of the Day by adopting Resolution 45/216. More than 90 nations participated in the inaugural World Population Day celebration on July 11, 1990.
