Saroj Khan: The Guru Who Taught Bollywood to Dance with Emotion
The first name that springs to mind when discussing Bollywood choreographers is Saroj Khan. Her memories, her passion and her incredible dancing skills are still alive in our hearts even though she is obviously no longer with us.
Her cardiac arrest caused her death on July 3 2020. She left behind her passion and the fortitude to never give up when she passed away at the age of 71. Throughout her life she continued to sway and dance.
Do You Know Saroj Khan’s True Name?
Saroj Khan was actually Nirmala Nagpal. Every song was made even more memorable by the unique quality of her style. She instructed well-known actresses like Madhuri Dixit Sridevi and Aishwarya Rai in dance. She combined the love of a mother with the gravity of a guru. Despite her tough exterior she had a tender heart.
Saroj Khan’s Wrath was Feared by Many
In an interview renowned Bollywood choreographer Bosco Martis described how he and his partner Caesar attempted to introduce western dance forms to Bollywood but they were primarily concerned about Saroj Khan’s wrath. According to Bosco Martis Saroj Khan was the queen of traditional and Indian style so the only person we were scared of when my partner Caesar and I were trying to introduce our dance style to Bollywood was her. However after getting to know her well I discovered that she genuinely wished to maintain the authenticity of Indianness.
She Showed Me her Appreciation by Giving me a Reward of Rs. 100
She blessed us, gave us the opportunity to work with her and always encouraged us, Bosco added. I count myself fortunate that she helped me improve my dancing skills. I recall that as a token of her gratitude on the Dance India Dance sets she gave me a reward of Rs 100. The joy of that moment can’t be put into words. Her strict style and maternal affection were both evident.
Acting for the First Time at Age 3
After performing in the movie Nazrana at the age of three Saroj began her career as a child artist but eventually developed a preference for dance. She first worked as a background dancer before beginning to study choreography at the age of 13. She was the well-known dance director Vs assistant. Sohanlal thoroughly studied dance subtleties.
Saroj Khan Rose to Fame as a Self-Employed Choreographer
The chance to work as an independent choreographer marked the true turning point in her career. She began her career as an independent choreographer with the movie Geeta Mera Naam but it was the hit song Main Teri Dushman from the 1986 movie Nagina that brought her fame. The audience was won over by Sridevi’s incredible dance in this song and Saroj Khan’s fame grew as well. Subsequently in 1987 the song Hawa Hawai by Mr. India made her a household name.
With Just One Song Saroj Khan Became a Hitmaker
The choreography of the song Ek Do Teen from the 1988 movie Tezaab was the pinnacle of Saroj Khan’s career. In addition to instantly making Madhuri famous, this song elevated Saroj Khan to the status of hit machine. Saroj Khan received the first prize in the Filmfare Awards Best Choreography category which was introduced for the first time due to the song’s enormous success.

Over 2000 Songs Have Been Choreographed
She was crowned the queen of the world of choreography by songs like Dholi Taaro Humko Aajkal Hai Intezaar Choli Ke Peeche Dhak Dhak Karne Laga Dola Re Dola and Nimbooda. . There are over 2000 songs that Saroj Khan choreographed. Her choreography featured numerous Bollywood celebrities dancing. Actresses Sadhna Vyjayanthimala Helen Sharmila Tagore Vaida Rehman Zeenat Aman Rekha Madhuri Dixit Karisma Urmila Raveena Tandon Aishwarya Rai and Kareena Kapoor were among those she gave dance lessons to.

Popularized Classical and Indian Folk Dance
Saroj Khan’s specialty was not restricting dance to mere steps. She felt that the story should be visible on the face and that dance should have expressions. She would interpret every line of every song and make the appropriate facial expressions and body language. She popularized classical dance and Indian folk dance in mainstream motion pictures. She was renowned for her distinct style, discipline and simplicity.
3 Times Received the National Award
3 National Awards and eight Filmfare Awards have been given to Saroj Khan. She also supported up-and-coming artists and served as a judge on TV reality shows. She elevated choreography to a respectable art form in addition to a profession.
