PM Modi Clarifies: No US Mediation or Trade Talks During Operation Sindoor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an emphatic clarification to then US President Donald Trump making it clear that India wanted no US mediation and did not talk of trade in leverage as diplomacy during Operation Sindoor. This direct dialogue was to clear any misunderstanding, especially that constantly promoted by Trump, about the part played by America in de-escalating the situations between India and Pakistan in the military conflict.

On May 7, 2025, India responded to a heinous terrorist attack on civilians in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, with an outward expression of power aims at eliminating terror, and hence known as the Operation Sindoor, which was a tri-service, measured reaction. The raid consisted of surgical strikes on the terrorist infrastructure targets in PoJK in Pakistan, and Pakistani Punjab, the farthest and widest Indian military strike since the war of 1971.
After the operation, President Trump had several times claimed that the US had played a pivotal role in broking a ceasefire between India and Pakistan and even pointed out that trade considerations were resorted to as a means of creating this peace. But during a 35-minute telephonic conversation of the two leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi put the record straight.

In the briefing to the media on the phone conversation between PM Modi and President Trump, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri expounded the message delivered by the Indian PM. Misri said that Modi told Trump that because of the entire drama of Operation Sindoor, there was not a single time even at one level that the trade deal between India and the US was discussed. He also made it clear that, there was also no mention of the US mediating between India and Pakistan.
It needs to be noted that it was India and Pakistan who on their own and through the existing military communications had been able to come to an understanding on the suspension of hostilities quite in their own name and at the request of Pakistan that this would be started. This statement was very much a refutation of this Trump proposal of the US intervention and leverage of trade.
Moreover, Prime Minister Modi also repeated what India has always insisted on it, and that is the position on mediation with Pakistan.

He definitively stated that India has “never accepted mediation, does not accept mediation, and will never accept mediation” on related matters with Pakistan, and that there is complete political consensus within India on the issue.

The call was significant because it was the first time Modi and Trump spoke directly after operation Sindoor. Modi claimed trump asked him to visit the US on his way back from Canada, after his G7 meeting, but he had other engagements. Misri said president trump “understood Prime minister Modi’s description of the event during operation Sindoor and he supported India’s battle against terrorism.”

This diplomatic work basically clarified India’s determination to tackle its own security concerns and its intention to stand firmly against third party mediation for bilateral issues with Pakistan. More importantly, it was a demonstration of India reestablishing its narrative in respect to the event surrounding operation Sindoor, that India’s actions were understood to be a direct action to combat terrorism as a sovereign state, not connected to anything else such as trade or concessions.
