Universal’s Epic Universe Set to Bring a $2 Billion Economic Boost to Florida in Its First Year
The Universal Orlando Resort is much into the news once again with the most ambitious project of its kind ever — Epic Universe. Inscribed in 2019, it is the fourth park of Universal Orlando and represents the largest single investment ever made in the theme parks of Universal’s parent organization, Comcast. Epic Universe, with a budget estimated at $7 billion, is a standpoint in the entertainment history but is also very important for the economic future of Florida.
Months of anticipation have come to fruition as preview ticket sales are now officially open to the general public. Initially reserved for a select few, the preview passes now allow guests into the park before it opens officially on May 22. Running till May 19, this preview period does say that some experiences may not be available yet as the park enters its final grooming phases.
In addition to being given a first look at the rides and attractions, this sneak preview is an important day for the state of Florida. According to economists, the first year’s revenues for Epic Universe are expected to deliver an impressive $2 billion lift to the economy of Florida. This impact comes from huge contributions in many areas, including $386 million in state and local taxes, $120 million in property tax, and $500 million in sales tax.
Opening the park will have ripple effects in areas beyond the gates of Universal. Tourist development taxes are estimated to bring in around $13 million to support additional infrastructure and marketing programs. Besides that, Universal is further investing $230 million to upgrade public facilities within the vicinity, such as roads, transportation, and utilities—these would benefit both the tourist experience and local overall quality of life.
From a job perspective, opening Epic Universe becomes a gigantic triumph. The park is expected to create more than 17,000 new jobs across the country, many of them concentrated in Florida. These cover a wide range of roles, from theme park operations and guest services to hospitality, construction, and transportation. The job creation surge will not only help the park run but provide long-term sustenance for thousands of men and women and their families.
