William Shakespeare: Life, Works, Legacy of England’s Greatest Playwright and Poet

William Shakespeare, generally regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world’s greatest dramatist, lived an extraordinary life-from humble beginnings at Stratford-upon-Avon into fame that even in death he endures as the “Bard of Avon.”

Although born in 1564 in the market town of Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, England, the exact date of Shakespeare´s birth has never been confirmed; custom marks it as April 23rd which also happens to be the date of his death. He was the first of three surviving children of John Shakespeare, a prosperous glover and local alderman, and Mary Arden, daughter of a wealthy landowning family. Early life in Stratford for Shakespeare would have included attendance at the local grammar school. Here, he would have undergone a quite rigorous education in Latin classics; however, as a result of his father’s financial troubles, the formal schooling probably ended by age 15.

In 1582, when he was aged 18, he married Anne Hathaway, who was eight years his senior. The couple had three children: Susanna, Hamnet, and Judith. Their only son, Hamnet, sadly, died at the tender age of 11.

Between 1585 and 1592, Shakespeare found his way to London, there beginning his rich career in a greatly burgeoning Elizabethan theatre world, establishing himself quickly as an actor, playwright, and shareholder in the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, which eventually became known as the King’s Men under the patronage of King James I.

His writing career has produced about 39 plays during his lifetime, all otherwise known as comedies, tragedies, histories, and romances. His works, which include Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and King Lear, have been taken beyond the mortal realms with their deep understanding of man as well as their complicated weaving of plots and imaginative use of language. These pieces constitute only a portion of his entire body of work, as Shakespeare also produced 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and many other verses. Therefore, he is, indeed, regarded as a gifted poet.

It appears that in around 1613, at 49 years of age, Shakespeare had retired to his family house in Stratford-upon-Avon. He later died in April 23, 1616, at age 52. Popular speculations say fever that came after a merry get-together with fellow playwrights Ben Jonson and Michael Drayton-the cause of his death is unknown to the precise extent.

Little survives of the records about the personal life of Shakespeare; yet it remains unparalleled in his literary legacy. They have been translated into nearly every major contemporary language and are performed more than any other playwright’s entire catalog. From a citation point of view, his influence on the English language and his continuous celebration as immortal are remembered many centuries after his death with accolades as the “Bard of Avon” and a true literary immortal.
