This was more than just a touch of frost in the handshake. Goenka was famous last season for having what appeared to be a fervent chat with Rahul after a few poor shows. With this latest knock out, Rahul not only made his mark by completing his third half-century this season but also made his entry into the IPL record books by becoming the fastest batsman to reach the milestone of 5000 runs – outstripping the likes of David Warner and Virat Kohli in the process. That’s no small feat by any stretch of the imagination and speaks volumes about the consistency and quality that he brings to the T20 format.
While Rahul was seen winning himself back from the arid performance during the time of Goenka ownership, the stark contrast was what made this storyline even richer. In a way, this match was Rahul’s response to last season’s burning questions, and he let his bat do all the talking.
The momentum surely rests with the Delhi Capitals as they look forward to taking on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru next at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
