Remembering Benazir Bhutto on her Death Anniversary


Today is the Death Anniversary of the first female Prime Minister of Pakistan. Bhutto became the Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1988.

Who was she?

She was born in Karachi to a politically important family. Her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was the 9th President of Pakistan from 1971 to 1973 and also the Prime Minister from 1973 to 1977. He also founded the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), the party to which Benazir belonged and co-chaired.

Her father’s government was overthrown by General Mohammad Zia ul-Haq. During this time, Benazir was kept under house arrest. In the year 1979, her father was hanged to death under the reign of Zia.

In 1980, after a family tragedy, she moved out of Pakistan to England in 1984. She came back only in the year 1984 and became a strong proponent of having open elections all over the country.

How was her Political life?

After the sudden death of Zia in a plane crash, his dictatorship came to an end and Bhutto became the first-ever female Prime Minister of Pakistan in 1988. She ruled only till 1990 after she did not do well in the 1990 elections.

However, she returned to power in 1993 but could be in power only till 1996. Bhutto faced a lot of controversies during her office period and also faced corruption charges.

Exile Era

She lived in exile in Dubai and Britain, but she maintained being the de-facto leader of PPP and managing it from outside.

Death

She came back to Pakistan in 2007 and faced a suicide attack bomb blast. However, she survived the attack but a few days later on December 27, 2007, she was assassinated. Her death marked to be a dark day in the democracy of Pakistan. She was mourned by the entire country and three days of mourning was called in her respect.
