Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha to meet telecom CEOs over call drop issue

Manoj Sinha the Telecom Minister will be holding his first meeting with the CEOs of mobile service providers on Monday in order to discuss industry issues in general and call drop problem in particular.

This will also mark as the first meeting of Sinha with the telecom leaders.

On the one hand, the Telecom Ministry has been gearing up for mega spectrum auction that will see airwaves worth around Rs 5.66 lakh crore up for grabs. Whereas on the other hand, Sinha has to address the issue of call drops as the Supreme Court has recently struck down telecom regulator Trai’s order of further making the operators compensate users for every call drop subject to a limit.

In fact, in order to check call drops, Trai has now demanded more teeth, including imposing of a fine of up to Rs 10 crore on the operators and jail term of up to two years for their executives, which prompted the telecom companies to term such baseless powers as “draconian”.

However, Sinha’s other priority will be further framing of regulations on the much-debated Net neutrality issue in which battlelines are already drawn between telecom operators and the Internet-based content providers.
