A record rainfall of 100.60 mm was recorded in Shillong on Tuesday, bringing not only Shillong, but large parts of Meghalaya, India, to a complete standstill.

45 people residing in these low-lying areas near the Umkhrah River have had to be evacuated to higher grounds by the district authority. People also living in the ground floor near these areas have had to move their belongings to a higher floor as the city is supposed to be inundated with continuing rainfalls till 21st August.

The Umkhrah River banks in the Polo area has been encroached upon over the years and has altered its natural pathway. The continuous rainfall during this time of the year always seems to cover a wider area every year as more built development continues along the banks of this river.
