R.I.P Somnath Chatterjee – Former Lok Sabha speaker passed away at 89. Notably, he was admitted to a Kolkata hospital with a kidney ailment. The 10 –time parliamentarian had been in and out of the hospital from last two months. Doctors said he was undergoing dialysis. And he took his last breath today. Interestingly, in his political career, he has lost only one election to Mamta Banerjee in 1984.

1. Key Member of CPM

Somnath Chatterjee was the key leader of CPM, which he had joined in the year 1968.He became Lok Sabha Speaker in the year 2004 when Manmohan Singh Led UPA government came in power.

2. Pro Tem Speaker

He served the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009. Notably, Mr. Chatterjee was the 2nd pro tem speaker after Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar.

3. CPM Expulsion

However, the veteran leader expelled from CPM in 2008 after the Left front, one of the biggest allies of UPA government withdrew its support over the India- US nuclear deal. Notably, the party wanted Mr. Chatterjee to step down as the speaker and vote against the government during the trust vote.

4. Longest Lok Sabha Parliamentarian

He was one of the longest-serving parliamentarians of India. He was the ten –time Lok SabhaMP, from 1971- 2009.

5.Advocate by profession

Before joining Politics in 1968 he was an advocate by profession. He took up his legal practice at Calcutta High Court before getting into politics.

6.Retirement

He retired from active politics in the year 2009. On his expulsion, he said it was one of the saddest days of his life.

7. His death is a public loss

President Ram Nath Kovind has stated his death as a public loss in Bengal and India.

8.Tweets

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also tweeted about his sad demise. PM called him a stalwart of Indian Politics. He wrote that Somnath Chatterjee has made our democracy rich. He always supported poor and vulnerable.
