Kisan March: Important Highlights
The farmers’ protest which was supposed to start on Wednesday was postponed by one day as police personnel detained the vehicles carrying the farmers to the venue in places like Palghar, Dahanu, and Jawahar. Around 50,000 farmers began their eight-day protest march on Thursday from Nashik to Mumbai to get their demands fulfilled which include loan waivers, minimum support, and land rights.
Farmers from 23 districts across Maharashtra have joined the march. The march was flagged off from Nashik on Wednesday to mark the fourth death anniversary of communist ideologue Govind Pansare. The march will end on February 27, a day when the country will celebrate the 88th death anniversary of freedom fighter Chandrashekar Azad.

Notably, this is the second time in the past 12 months when farmers are protesting against the BJP government on such a big scale. It is expected to take place for nine days and it is organized by the CPI (M)’S. All India Kisan Sabha.
All India Kisan Sabha has accused the Devendra Fadnavis government of not fulfilling its promises that it made to the farmers after the last protest which took place in March 2018.
Notably, the farmers are demanding immediate relief in the view of the drought-like situation, land rights, minimum support price, and a crop insurance scheme.

Apart from it, organizers of Kisan march have accused the government of trying to crush the peaceful movement through force. According to a report, They further added, “For several hours, police kept detaining groups of farmers who were coming to join the procession without giving any substantial reason.”
In the last march, around 3500 farmers had marched to Mumbai from Nashik, and it was called off only after the Maharashtra government accepted a majority of their demands. However, farmers have claimed that none of the demands were eventually fulfilled.
