Gujarat riots, 2002, killing over 1000 people

The court on Thursday convicted 24 people over the religious riots which took place14 years ago when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Special Court judged by P B Desai, found the them guilty of brutally killing 69 Muslims residing in the city of Ahmedabad, in one of the worst massacre held in week long violence.

The riots which killed over 1000 people in total have long dogged Modi who was accused by the human rights group for not looking after its people during the riots as the head of the state. But the latest verdict will probably have an impact on him as the court-ordered investigations of any wrongdoings.

Celebrations erupted after the judgment, inside the courtroom were the victims families started clapping and thanked the judge.But Mr. Desai also held 36 people for their lack of evidence and said that the massacre was a spontaneous act and not any criminal conspiracy.
