If you’re on the hunt for a smartphone that excels in selfies, boasts an elegant curved design, and won’t break the bank, the Vivo V29 5G might be the right choice. Released in India on October 4, the V29 series includes the base V29 5G model. In a crowded market with competitors like the OnePlus Nord 3 5G, IQOO Neo 7 Pro, Honor 90, and the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G, the Vivo V29 aims to make its mark.

Design:

Straight out of the box, the Vivo V29 impresses with its sleek, curved design. The screen seems to blend seamlessly into the body, creating a near-bezel-less effect. The back of the phone, with a sandpaper-like finish, feels premium in the hand, but it can be a bit slippery. The colour-changing rear glass adds a touch of elegance to the design. The phone is slim and lightweight, but its fragility might require a protective case.

Display:

The Vivo V29 sports a 6.78-inch 1.5k 120Hz AMOLED screen with impressive colour reproduction. The display offers vibrant colours and sharp text. It handles touch interactions well, preventing accidental touches at the edges. The screen remains visible even in bright sunlight, though some slight oversaturation and banding may be noticed during 4K HDR video playback.

Performance:

Powered by the Snapdragon 778G chip, the Vivo V29 offers smooth multitasking and gaming performance. After some initial hiccups due to auto-refresh rate switching, setting it to 120Hz resolved the issue. The phone handles multitasking, gaming, and social media scrolling with ease. However, during extended 4K HDR video playback, some frame drops may occur, possibly due to processor limitations or optimization issues.

Software:

The Funtouch OS 13 Global provides plenty of customization options and animations. It offers a smooth, personalised experience but comes with some pre-installed third-party apps and promotional notifications that can be a bit intrusive.

Battery:

With a 4,600mAh battery and 80W charging, the Vivo V29 delivers good battery life, offering over six hours of screen-on time for moderate to heavy usage. The charger is fast, topping up the battery in about an hour. The phone also includes optimised charging settings for long-term battery health.

Camera:

The Vivo V29 features a 50 MP selfie camera that excels in daylight, producing photos with vibrant colours and sharp details. It handles HDR well in various lighting conditions. OIS ensures stability in photos and videos. However, some units may display errors in certain modes.

Room for Improvement:

The Vivo V29 lacks stereo speakers, with audio quality from the mono unit being average. Additionally, it may deliver spam notifications and banners, impacting the user experience. The haptic feedback is basic, and gamers seeking enhanced graphics might require a more powerful chip and a flat panel.

Price and Offers:

The Vivo V29 5G starts at Rs 32,999 and goes up to Rs 36,999 for the top-end model. It comes in three colour options with bank offers providing additional discounts.

Final Verdict:

If you prioritise selfies, appreciate a curved display, and can overlook some software compromises, the Vivo V29 is a solid choice. Shutterbugs will find the camera features exciting. However, if gaming or software experience is more crucial, there are other options to consider in this competitive market.
