Virat Kohli’s Emotional IPL Win Journey: From Years of Heartbreaks and Disappointment to Lifting the Trophy After 18 Years
Almost two decades of hard work and heart-wrenching moments culminated in a historic day when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) finally achieved glory, winning their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title in 2025. Kohli posted an emotional note on social media, one that touched millions of fans worldwide with its depiction of the roller-coaster ride of emotions and tireless efforts that led to the long-awaited victory.
“It’s a dream that’s come true, thanks to this team and a season I’ll never forget. It was a ride enjoyed to the hilt for the last 2.5 months. This one’s for the RCB fans who never left us in our darkest moments. This one’s for the years of heartbreak and disappointment. This is for every ounce of energy we left on the field for this team,” writes Kohli on Instagram. What followed was a lucid depiction of the bond he shares with the team and the fans, who, through thick and thin, stood by the RCB.
For the glad yet demanding milestone for the 36-year-old cricketer, the moment marked a transition that embarks with RCB from IPL’s inception in 2008. From almost every imaginable high and low—including the heartbreaking final losses in 2009, 2011, and 2016—Kohli has shown a near-fanatical loyalty to the franchise; his loyalty and leadership guided the franchise this year to clinch the ultimate prize.
Kohli reckoned that lifting the award after the long wait of 18 years would be the most emotional moment: “As for the IPL trophy-you’ve made me wait 18 years to be able to lift you and celebrate, my friend, but it has truly been worth the wait.” His journey with RCB embodies resilience, passion, and the undying spirit to achieve greatness.

He promptly provided a perspective on importance with reference to the IPL. In a refreshingly candid post-match interview, he stated that while the victory was really sweet, it still ranked “five levels below Test cricket.” Fame and adoration must have come from the IPL, but Kohli’s heart has always been for the traditional long format. He passionately advocated that young cricketers value Test cricket in all important respects for the respect and legacy it offers in the world of cricket.
“I have poured in my youth, my prime time, and my experience for this team. I have given everything possible from my end. Never in my wildest dreams did I think this day would come. I got emotional from ball one till the last ball,” said Kohli, remembering those very intense moments in the last few minutes of the match. Packed by his mates, seeing Kohli drop flat to the ground was one of the really touching aspects that brought out the humanity of sportive competition.
Kohli’s form this season was one of the most decisive factors in RCB’s triumph. By scoring 657 runs in 15 innings, including eight half-centuries often times anchoring the innings and allowing strong platforms for the team, Kohli’s form throughout the season was critical in establishing one of RCB’s winning points. His consistency and determination at the crease guided RCB in its wide application strategy and ultimate success.
Kohli, looking onward, pointed to the nearing end of his career. “In blissful sleep, tonight, I shall sleep like a baby,” he mused in the moment of happiness. Yet, he noted the limited life of his sport, adding, “Our career has an expiry date, I only have some few years to play this sport and I want to sit down at home after I remove my boots and say I gave in all I had.”
