After Sports Ministry Relaxes Rules for Participation, Indian Football Teams Join Asian Games 2023!
The excitement for the Asian Games 2023 is reaching new heights as the men’s and women’s Indian football teams join Asian Games 2023. Things have been pretty exciting for football admirers in India since getting the green signal to participate in the prestigious event. The Asian Games will take place in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China, from September 23 to October 8.
Earlier, the Indian sports ministry had set a strict criterion, stating that only teams ranked within the top eight in Asia would be eligible to represent India at the Games. Unfortunately, the Indian men’s football team was ranked 18th in Asia, and the women’s team was placed 11th among AFC nations, which disqualified them from participating based on the existing criteria.
However, after months of speculation and discussions, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has decided to relax its stance on the entry rules for the national sports federations. The decision came as a significant relief for Indian football enthusiasts and players who were eagerly waiting to showcase their talent at the continental event.
The announcement was made by Anurag Thakur, the Indian sports minister, who mentioned that the ministry considered the recent performances of the teams before granting this relaxation. This move highlights the ministry’s recognition of the efforts made by Indian football in recent times and its determination to support the development of the sport within the country.
This isn’t the first time that such a ranking-based criterion has posed a challenge for the Indian football teams. Back in 2018, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had faced a similar issue when it refused to clear the football teams for the Asian Games in Jakarta due to the same set of rules.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) president, Kalyan Chaubey, expressed his joy over the decision, calling it an important day for Indian football. He believes that this opportunity will further boost the morale of the players and contribute to the sport’s growth in the country.
In the history of the Asian Games, the Indian men’s football team has had moments of glory, winning gold medals at the New Delhi 1951 and Jakarta 1962 editions, and securing a bronze medal at Bangkok 1970. However, their performance has faced challenges in recent times.
For the Indian women’s team, it’s a chance to make a mark on the continental stage. Having participated in only two Asian Games editions so far, they finished eighth at Bangkok 1998 and ninth at Incheon 2014. The inclusion of women’s football at the Asian Games began in 1990.

With the relaxation of the entry rules, the Indian football teams are gearing up to compete against some of the best in Asia.
