Write a letter to me someday
“According to a Pew survey, the average college student sends about 2,000 texts every month. It’s likely that they don’t write even one letter.”
I am one of the dinosaurs in today’s internet age who would still roam about the streets of Delhi to find patterned handmade papers, the perfect fountain pens, beautiful envelopes and postcards with pictures of exquisite locations. Nothing makes me as happy as putting pen to paper and conveying words in my own handwriting. Nothing gives me goosebumps as much as receiving a letter in somebody else’s handwriting.
With the rate at which we are going, It is no wonder then that we would all soon be approaching the protagonist Theodore Twombly in the movie ‘Her’ or Tom Hansen in the movie ‘500 days of Summer’ to compose letters or greeting cards for us because we are unwilling or unable to write letters of a personal nature ourselves.
For one, hand written letters are more heart-warming. They bring with them a plethora of dreams, feelings, hopes and aspirations. In simple words, letters bring joy. They show that the letter-writer has put in more effort and time, that you matter that much to them, thereby making the recipient of the letter feel more special.Papers also seem to carry their own fragrance and handwriting always establishes a connection more deep.
Letters are also more unpredictable and therefore receiving one would always leave you surprised and elated. Communicating with a pen pal through letters also makes one more patient for unlike the instant messages and mails, letters take time. But aren’t they worth all the wait?
It worries me that letters will go the typewriters way and that this exquisite but already diminishing art of letter writing will soon become extinct. In order to preserve it, I think we ought to start communicating with atleast one distant friend through letters, starting with one letter a week. Find a pen pal and form a ‘letter bond’ with him/her. If possible, try and use recycled papers.
