Now an Italian cheese can help in bringing down your BP

Science and technology has constantly introduced various new super foods that dramatically improves our health, but this time they have brought to us an Italian cheese to lower your high blood pressure(HBP).

According to a research by Catholic University of Piacenza and Hypertension Unit of Guglielmo da Saliceto Hospital, Italy a serving of Grana Padano cheese can help lower your blood pressure.

Grana Padano is am Italian staple similar to Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, which contains peptides (short chains of amino acids) and which further have strong angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitor activity.

These peptides have similar effect of relaxing the blood vessels as the popular ACE inhibitors blood pressure prescriptions drugs, like captopril (Capoten) or benazepril (Lotensin).

The study was done on 30 adults with hypertension, were provided with either an ounce per day of Grana Padano cheese or a placebo imitation cheese for a period of two months.

The results were 7-8mm drop in systolic blood pressure and a 5-7mm diastolic blood pressure drop, depending on automated monitoring systems versus in-office monitoring.

However no changes were seen in body mass index (BMI), blood sugar levels and blood lipids.

The study was presented at the 31st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Hypertension.
