The singer, who has been singing in Bollywood for eleven years and was still unpopular, became a Rock star overnight!
Labh Janjua, best known for his Bhangra songs is a Bollywood singer and song-writer. With his latest hit, ‘London Thumakada’ (Queen), he won hearts of millions of party-goers.
Caught up on a telephonic interview, Labh had a caller-tune, from one of his hit tracks, ‘Soni de Nakhre’. He shared his life and experiences with Avalokita Pandey, OneWorldNews India.
Q. When did you get your first offer to sing for Bollywood?
Ans- The opportunity knocked my door eleven years back. The offer to sing in ‘Boom’, starred by Amitabh Bachchan and Jackie Shroff, came when I was working on a Punjabi album. In the movie, I played a track, ‘Mundeyan to bach ke rahin’ which set a world record and in this way, I entered Bollywood. In the movie Naksha, the song ‘U & I’ are both written and sung by me.
Q. Did you always want to be a singer or was it just by chance?
Ans- No, it was not just by chance. I always wanted to be a singer since childhood. I used to participate in singing competition in schools and colleges. Before entering Bollywood, I did around sixteen to seventeen Punjabi albums including few emotional and spiritual songs.
Q. How would you describe the life behind the screen?
Ans- Actually, for playback singers, the life behind the screen is not that dazzling. You sing and the track goes hit, rocking all parties and still nobody knows you! Ironically, in a party where people are dancing on my songs, even if I go and next to them, they won’t even recognise me!.
Here, I would like to draw a point that the fault is not of the audience but of the directors and the music industry, who do not give equal credit to the playback singers.
Q. Which is the next upcoming Bollywood movie you are singing for?
Though lesser known in the industry, yet he seems to be happier with his growth. Labh Janjua has recorded around hundred and thirty six songs in Bollywood. Few of his all-time hits are “Jee Karda” from Singh is King; “Dance pe chance” from Rab Ne Bana di Jodi; “Baari barsi”from Band Baja Baraat; “Pyaar karke” from Pyar ke side effects and still many more. “The directors takes me to be their lucky charm and that’s the reason includes me in their movies”, concludes Labh.
