Gavian Being Humble

1. How did you start as a DJ?

I started by being inspired by listening to “I will be missing you pretty deeply.” Then I got into hip-hop, then I used to see Djs playing on turntables on TV. It was the biggest thing for me, I wanted to be a Dj from then on. Then there used to be day parties organized around mid-2000 and I was called in to help for ticketing as a bouncer. I used to go just to see them play. And then the VCDs were introduced.

I remember, the first time I played everything just shut down. Then the technician came and turned it back on,” Gavian laughs. “The Technician ran and pointed the right button to press play; then started to do opening acts for other DJ. The selection of the tracks and the connectivity of the crowd is where I learn from these experiences. To this date I still remember that and I can’t believe I’m playing in Sunburn.

2.Tell us what the audience can expect on the 29th November 2014?

WOW, Sunburn, the biggest festival in Asia, here in Shillong. With this Festival, The Growth of EDM, Coming to the Rock capital of INDIA, Shillong. It will put Shillong on the map as the EDM Capital also I hope. I think, the big difference is, I want the audience to grow and understand the variations of EDM.

3. Do you prefer being called a Dj or Producer, Since there are some who are just Dj but few who are both?

As of Now, I am a Dj but I am coming up with a fusion of the Khasi Indigenous beat with the next level to the EDM. If it works out and its good enough. I might come up with album and probably release it by next year.

4. How do you as a Dj get prepared for the Show? In the Morning, What goes in your mind before turning the lights on your mixers, on the stage, the cheer of the audience in the background, the lights and you noticing the audience as far as the Horizon?

It’s a difficult question for me to answer but I know for sure I will be praying to God and be saying hope it is all good and people will like my set and especially since I will be playing my first original track. It will be a glimpse of our own traditional music and I hope the audience will like it and say Gavian play some more on that day.

5. Where from here ….after Sunburn?

If I get the opportunity I hope Tomorrow Land. It’s the best place to be for any artist to perform.

6. Who inspires you?

My master, Jazzy Joe one of the best Dj in INDIA. I actually like the fact that he still plays with turntables. But international level Armin Van Buuren and Hardwell.

7. What advice or tips would you give to youngsters who want to become a Dj?

One message I can tell them is work very hard, now the technology is making it easier compared to when I started. There are a lot of Djs who do play a lot of preset mix. To me there is no fun in it. To me if I have to play, I’m an entertainer. I should know what type of crowd I am having right now and what type of music they would like. We mix live. We have to play in all genres depending on the venue and the various crowds both young and the young at heart.

Before I had to start with VCD then slowly upgraded ourselves in between jobs and bought new players. When I went for my Dj-ing courses in Delhi with Jazzy Joe in 2007, it took me some time to develop and get to that level. It takes a lot of time and a lot of hard work.

Being here in Shillong I have to do something else to survive. For me it’s about passion not about the money. Right now the youngsters who are entering to be Dj’s they need to work hard, it’s not just about popularity but the love of the music. Hope they can understand the feeling I have right now in couple of hours I will be on stage at Sunburn Reload Shillong 2014.

8. What motivates you at this point in your Career?

Right now, I have to still struggle and push myself every day to reach the next level. Every stage I am one, I know that I am still learning. I’m an entertainer.
