VK Sasikala becomes new chief minister, here is all you need to know


General Secretary of the ruling AIADMK VK Sasikala, has finally accepted her party’s request to take over as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu. She was a long term companion of the former Chief Minister the late J Jayalalithaa aka Amma, Sasikala was elected as leader of the AIADMK party on Sunday.

Well, party members were having strong similar opinion of making Sasikala a new chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Now it finally happened.

Former CM O Panneerselvam resigns citing personal reasons for his decision.

After the tragic death of Jayalalithaa aka Amman, O Panneerselvam becomes the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. But now he tendered his resignation in the evening citing “personal reasons”. In his letter sent to the governor,

Panneerselvam also sought to relieve the council of ministers appointed by him by Monday.

As per reports, Sasikala is expected to swear in as chief minister on February 9, which is an auspicious day. According to a reports “A formal announcement will be made soon.” .

Action started early in the day when the entire Tamil Nadu cabinet led by Panneerselvam reached Poes Garden — the residence of Jayalalithaa where Sasikala is put up — and held a meeting with the party leader for about an hour and a half.

Later in the day the ministers joined a meeting of party MLAs at AIADMK headquarters where Panneerselvam announced the resolution naming Sasikala as legislative party leader.

Sasikala has faced a lot of Twitter trolls as well. When social media was criticising her and a Twitter hashtag “TNsaysNo2Sasi” was trending, her party MLAs were applauding Sasikala’s acceptance speech.

VK Sasikala’s promise

Just like other, politicians Sasikala too had made promises. She promised to “fulfil the dreams of Amma (Jayalalithaa)” and that “the AIADMK-led government will work for the people” in her brief address to party MLAs at the party headquarters before leaving the crowd and supporters gathered in and around the party headquarters.

Opposition parties are criticising the move

Opposition parties are not at all happy with this move. They are strongly criticising the Sasikala. M K Stalin, leader of opposition in the state assembly was quoted saying that “This is against the wishes of not just the people of TN but against the wishes of Jayalalithaa herself because Sasikala was someone who even Jayalalithaa had not given any official position or party responsibility.”

Just after Sasikala’s Twitter handle referred to as @CMOTamilnadu, several tweets criticising her started trending.
