Born in Mysore state, one of India’s most recognized writers’ R.K. Narayan passed away in 2001. He immortolized the fictional sleepy town of Malgudi with his series ‘Malgudi Days’.
He built a home for himself and his family here, after his landlord asked him to vacate his rented premises, way back in the 1940s-50s. This house, loacted in the Yadavgiri locality of Mysore, became his refuge for writing. He had a 8 windowed study built on one side of the house, which gave him a very good view, which one would imagine helped in his creative process.
Ill health forced the writer to move to his daugther’s house in Chennai, where he died. Subsequently, his grandchildren, who had little use of the property, decided to tear it down and re-develop it.
However, as soon as the demolition work started, a movement was started by Narayan’s fans, which led the Karnataka Government to buy the property from the heirs of Narayan. The government, is now developing and restoring the property, to serve as a museum to Narayan.
