·         Who is Matka Man?

Meet Alag Natarajan popularly known as Matka Man of Delhi. The 72 –year –old cancer survivor, who hails from Panchsheel Park, Delhi wakes up at 5 am everyday and fills up 70- 80 matkas in different parts of South Delhi.  In peak summer months, he fills in around 100 matkas.  Notably, Natarajan is a cancer survivor and other than water, he also feeds a special healthy salad and food to around 400 people on a weekly basis.

Recently, we indulged with him in an exclusive chat and spent a day with him to understand how he works. Well, at 72, he is a force to reckon with. Natarajan lives in Panchsheel Park with his wife and staff. Interestingly, there are people who have been working with him for the past 15 years. He started off this initiative in the year 2014 when he returned to India after 40 years. He was taken aback by the fact that people in the capital were without the access to the most basic need – cold water in the hot scorching heat.

He has got matkas installed all across South Delhi on different stands. He fills them everyday so that people can drink it whenever required.  Today, his efforts have resulted in him being labelled the Matka Man.  While talking to us he revealed, “Earlier people were not able to accept my Matakas. They thought I am doing this to become an MLA or a Councilor. But it is my way to give back to society.”

He further added that it is important to treat everyone with dignity. In our society there is a huge divide and the underprivileged are not treated with respect.  All I want is – Everyone should be treated with dignity and respect. This is a basic human right.

While serving people, he makes sure that everyone should feel comfortable. He offers a seat to everyone so that they can sit with dignity and enjoy their meal. Watch his exclusive interview here:

Well, his story restores our faith in Humanity and inspires us to do better in life. If he can do it, we all can do it. Our small efforts can make a big difference. He is using his compassion to bridge the divide in the society and we absolutely appreciate his efforts.
