Maa Kushmanda is the fourth form of the Goddess Durga. She is worshipped on the fourth day of the festival of Navratri (nine nights of Navadurga) and as the consort of Shiva. Her name has a meaning that signifies her prominent role: Ku means “a little”, Ushma means “warmth” or “energy”, and Anda means “cosmic egg”.

Maa Kushmanda is also glorified by the ten different aspects of the power of Shakti, known as Dasa Mahavidyas. She is believed to improve health and bestow wealth as well as strength. As per Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu was able to create the universe when Maa Kushmanda smiled like a flower which blossomed like a bud, and when there was eternal darkness all around, she made the universe. She is called Adiswarup and Adishakti. She nurtures the entire world with her divine and gentle smile, which reveres her with the name ‘Kushmanda’. After taking the form of Siddhidatri, Goddess Parvati resided in the Sun’s centre to balance energy and light.

Maa Kushmanda has eight hands in which she holds Kamandul, bow, arrow, a jar of nectar (Amrit), discus, mace and a lotus. On the one hand, she holds a rosary which blesses her devotees with the Ashtasiddhis and Navniddhis. She is also known as Ashtabhuja. She has a radiant face and golden body complexion. Maa resides in the core of the Sun and thus controls the Surya Lok.

दधाना हस्तपद्माभ्यां कूष्माण्डा शुभदास्तु मे ॥

The Goddess is then offered shringaar samagri like kajal, sindoor, bangles, bindi, comb, toe ring, mirror, anklets, earrings, perfume nose pin, necklace, red chunri etc.
She is worshipped with red flowers, and many devotees also offer Wax Gourd or Petha as a symbolic sacrifice.
