As the country gears up for the festive season, Dhanteras 2023 emerges as the harbinger of joy and prosperity. Falling on November 10th, this auspicious day holds a special place in the hearts of millions, signalling the beginning of Diwali celebrations.

Historical Significance of Dhanteras

Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, holds a deep-rooted history in Hindu mythology and is an integral part of the Diwali celebrations. The word “Dhanteras” is derived from the combination of two Sanskrit words, “Dhan,” meaning wealth, and “Teras,” meaning the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight on which the festival is celebrated.

The history of Dhanteras is often associated with several legends, one of which revolves around the story of King Hima’s son. According to mythology, it was prophesied that the young prince would meet his demise on the fourth day of his marriage due to a snake bite. On the fateful night, the prince’s newlywed wife, aware of the prophecy, laid out all her gold and silver ornaments in a heap and lit lamps around their chamber. To ward off the serpent, she narrated stories and sang songs throughout the night.

When Yama, the god of death, arrived in the form of a serpent, he was blinded by the brilliance of the lamps and the glittering ornaments. Mesmerised by the enchanting stories and songs, Yama forgot his mission and eventually left without taking the prince’s life. This night came to be known as Dhanteras, and the tradition of lighting lamps and buying new utensils and ornaments on this day is believed to bring prosperity and ward off evil.

Another legend associated with Dhanteras involves the story of Lord Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, emerging with a pot of elixir during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan). This event symbolises the triumph of good over evil and the arrival of prosperity and health. Devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari on Dhanteras seeking blessings for well-being and longevity.

Over the years, Dhanteras has evolved into a day dedicated to the worship of wealth and prosperity. People traditionally buy gold, silver, utensils, and other items on this day, believing that it brings good fortune. The historical and mythological significance of Dhanteras adds depth to its celebration, making it a cherished and culturally rich festival in India.
