Dhanteras 2022: Date, Time and Puja

The word Dhana means wealth and teras means 13th day. Dhanteras is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Hindu month of Aswayuja. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped. People worship her to seek her blessings for prosperity and wealth. Lord Kubera is also worshipped on this day, especially by the business community.

The significance of buying utensils and jewellery on this day

Hindus all across the country start cleaning their houses much before the Diwali celebrations. Till Dhanteras, they make sure that no corner of the house is left unclean. This is the day when people welcome Goddess Lakshmi at their place. The meaning of Dhan is wealth. It is an extremely auspicious day to make new purchases. It is believed that new purchases on this day ensure the inflow of wealth and good luck throughout the year. One can find huge discounts on gadgets and jewellery.

Interesting Story about Dhanteras

There are so many folklores associated with the essence of celebrating Dhanteras. According to one folklore, King Hima’s daughter–in–law saved his son from the God of death Yamraj by lighting a lot of diyas. His son was destined to die on the fourth day of his marriage but his wife saved him. She didn’t allow Yamraj to enter the room by putting heaps of silver and gold coins on the door.

Another story revolves around the Lord Dhanvantri. He is considered ‘the father of Ayurveda medicine’ which means Vaidya of Gods. Dhanvantri is the ultimate healer and the most benevolent Lord who removes all fears and diseases from the face of humanity. Chanting some of the most powerful mantras of Lord Dhanvantri helps mankind in finding happiness and prosperity.

It is said that Deva and Asuras were churning the ocean, 14 precious things were churned out from the depth of the ocean. And Dhanvantri was one of those. When he emerged during Samudra Manthan, he was holding a Kalash full of Amrit (an ayurvedic herbal mix) in one hand and sacred text of Ayurveda in another.

We also perform a Lakshmi Puja on this day as goddess Lakshmi, as she also emerged from Samudra Manthan. She is considered the goddess of wealth.
