Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Bursting Breast Cancer Myths with Dr Shefali Agrawal

Self – Examination is the only way to reduce the risk of Breast Cancer- Dr Shefali Agrawal

October is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness month. Breast Cancer is indeed one of the most talked about cancers and a lot of awareness has been already spread on it. But still, there is a long way to go. The theme for breast cancer awareness 2022 is –close the care gap.  There are so many myths about breast cancer, and we need to burst them to create more awareness.

As October is coming to an end, we decided to talk to Dr. Shefali Agarwal and get clarity on some of the most asked questions on Breast Cancer. Dr. Shefali Agrawal is a Surgical Oncologist who focuses on the management of breast and gastrointestinal cancers. Notably, she has developed a state – of –the art Breast Conservation Surgery Program in India with excellent outcomes.

Here is an excerpt from the interview and some important points that she highlighted during the conversation.

#Myth 1- Wearing Bra can cause Breast Cancer

One of the most common questions asked again and again – Is there any relation between breast cancer and wearing a bra. To which Dr Shefali replied, “There is absolutely no connection between these two. There is no scientific study on a higher risk of breast cancer and wearing a bra.” She further added, “If you don’t wear a sports bra while exercising, it could damage your breast.”

(Self-examination is important)

#Myth2: Lump is the only sign of breast cancer

We also asked her about the lump. Is it the only sign of breast cancer? Dr Shefali threw light on it and said – Other than a lump, there are several other signs of breast cancer. Yes, it is the most common sign of breast cancer but it is not the only one. While talking about it, she emphasized on doing a self -examination as it can help to detect breast cancer at an early age. Every girl should start self -examination at the age of 18.

#Myth 3:  Screening has a side effect on our health

The only acceptable screening method is a mammogram. It should start at the age of 40. It should be done every year. It doesn’t have any side effects. And self- examination doesn’t come under screening and this term shouldn’t be used for it.

(No relation with Bra and Cancer)

Here is her complete Interview :

The self –examination is equally important as a mammogram. If you do it regularly, you can reduce the risk of breast cancer.  As you will understand your breast better, and if you will find abnormality, schedule an appointment with a specialist immediately.

Wrapping up the session, she said, “Healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk of breast cancer or any other cancer. “ If you have any queries and any other questions related to this, you can write to us.
