Women are not getting what they deserve in the best academies of sciences of India. The country is near the bottom in a ranking of 69 countries on the basis of membership of women in these institutions.
The membership of three years is significant because prestigious academies promote scientific excellence and provide support for government policies.
The survey was conducted in 2014 and released in February this year by members of the Inter Academy Association (IPA).
Until 2014, INSA had no women on their governing body of 31 members. National Academy of Sciences of the USA, and the academies of Switzerland and Sweden, had 47% of women on their boards. Cuban schools had 40% women, while Canada and Panama had 38% each. Holland was 43%, the UK 40% and Ireland 36%.
