Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that distorts reality for the individual and prevents normal functioning. The act of smoking has often been related to some form of psychosis. There also exists a relation between schizophrenia and smoking. It has been found that an
average of 80% with schizophrenia also smokes.
Some studies have found that smoking coupled with other factors such as genetic factors are a cause of the mental illness. Whereas, other studies have found that many schizophrenic patients are smokers.
The reason for this according to a study by Lyon is that the schizophrenics try an self medicate themselves for the same.
However, what comes first (smoking or psychosis) is a question that is still being pondered upon.
