Deficiency of Vitamin D can cause serious health problems

The Indian Medical Association under the Rise and Shine campaign of their had organized a continuing medical education (CME) programme to further discuss the growing epidemic of the Vitamin D deficiency among many Indian people. The CME was also attended by over 40 leading doctors of the city.

Vitamin D, which is also known as the sunshine vitamin, plays a very crucial role in calcium and also bone metabolism. It protects the body against the cognitive disorders, diabetes, cancer and also CVDs like congestive heart failure and the left ventricular hypertrophy.

The Rise and Shine campaign which is a national movement was initiated last year by the Indian Medical Association under an unconditional educational grant from the USV.
It had aimed to create, over a period of two years, sensitivity in its 2.5-lakh members across the 30 States and 1,700 branches about the need to further raise awareness of Vitamin D deficiency.

Dr. Harischandra Prasad, the MD General Medicine, Bhimavaram, has said that incidence of Vitamin D deficiency was also rapidly growing among the Indian population owing to the poor dietary habits, inadequate exposure to the sunlight and also absence of national food fortification policy.
