Are DU Colleges Worth Their Cut Offs?

Delhi University is the dream university for many school students. In the era of such high competition the colleges of Delhi University are setting up high cut offs, which makes it very difficult for the students to grasp their seats in the university colleges for which students toil hard in the board exams. Whooping 100% cut off is not justified as students toil hard to have a 90+ score and in the race they lack the main purpose of education which is ‘knowledge.’

But are the students who are getting admissions in the colleges that they desired happy with what they have got?

“Though DU is not having good selection criteria, instead there should be well planned entrances and personal interviews to provide quality in education. Otherwise the top notch educational institutions like DU are just nourishing the gold and gems and not helping the low rankers to get a chance to study and develop says a non-DUite Abhishek Mittal, BVP Pune.”

“The cut offs aren’t justified, it demotivate students and do not portray the intellectual ability of a person. It’s sometime acceptable that they wish for a better crowd but crowd too requires something in return claims a DUite Akash Tyagi from Maharaja Agrasen College.”

The students keep filing the complaints for bad infrastructures, basic drinking water amenity and clean washrooms but are shrugged off as no actions are taken against anything. They suffer a lot because of the poor faculty as the teachers are never on time and are never serious except the faculty of few high reputed colleges like SRCC, St. Stephens College, JMC, LSR, etc. The undergraduates stop expecting their personal development in these colleges as there is no practical exposure given to the students and hence low placement records can be seen. Those who wish to earn bread or want to experience the corporate world are taken away from these opportunities as they do not get placements after their graduation and have to pursue their education further so that they could get a placement.

The entire point of our education system is to provide equal opportunities to the students from every background, every caste and region. But by raising the cut offs, a lot of talented students are missing the opportunity to get admission in DU. Rather we should say that the Delhi University is actually losing by giving up on high talents not being able to provide admission to students on the basis of their knowledge and intellect but by their board percentages.

“Bad infrastructure, no photostat shop in the college for which they have to visit other colleges for the purchase of readings of their courses. The union and authorities pass no conclusions and the decisions remain pending for years says Shiva Jain, DRC, DU.”

“The colleges like SRCC, St. Stephens, Hindu, etc do deserve a better cut off which come up with better faculty and basic facilities but the rest of the colleges are not at all worthy when they cannot even provide good canteens for the students says Kanika Gupta, RLA, DU.”
