World Contraception Day 2022 is celebrated on September 26 to celebrate the importance of family planning in people’s lives, improve awareness of all contraceptive methods and enable young people to make informed choices on their reproductive and sexual health. On World Contraception Day 2022, we have brought you 12 essential facts and figures about contraception in India and the world.

1. As per the report of Guttmacher.org, more than 21.1 crore pregnancies are estimated to occur every day, and currently, 40% are unwanted pregnancies.

2. Of the 40 percent unwanted pregnancies, about 50 percent ends with abortion, often in an unsafe condition that threatens the health and lives of women.

3. About 1.6 crore adolescent girls aged between the ages of 15 and 19 give birth every year. Ten lakhs of these girls are even under 15. These girls are at a higher risk of incurring fatal complications while giving birth compared to women more than 19 years of age.

4. A reportof UNAIDS, UNICEF said that young people are more likely to get sexually transmitted diseases than adults. In the sub-Saharan Africa, adolescent girls are disproportionally affected by HIV and account for almost a quarter of new infections.

5. Around 3.8 crore adolescents are sexually active in democratic countries. 60 percent of these do not use a contraceptive method. Married adolescent women face the highest level of unmet needs for the use of contraception.

6. Young women and adolescent girls living in the emergency settings face difficulties in accessing contraceptives. More than 500 girls and women die due to childbirth and pregnancy complications.

7. There are about 17 contraceptive methodsa person can choose from. Female sterilisation is amongst the most common method worldwide followed by the intrauterine device (IUD).

8. As per the Encyclopedia of Birth Control, first condoms appeared in 3000 BC which were made up of fish bladders and animal intestines.

9. As per the National Health Profile 2018 and the National Family Health Survey (2015-16), about 95 percent of the married couples in the age group of 15 to 49 do not use condoms. People in Andhra Pradesh use condom lowest as a family planning measure with only 0.2 percent men using it. Telangana with 0.5 percent, Tamil Nadu at 0.8 percent, Bihar at 1 percent and Karnataka at 1.3 percent follow Andhra Pradesh in the usage of condoms.

10. According to the 2015 United Nations report on the trend of contraceptive usage, Hong Kong (50.1 percent), Japan (46.1 percent), Bostwana (35.8 percent), Russia (25 percent), Congo has (13.9 percent), the US (11.6 percent) and the UK (7 percent) have a higher percentage of condom use.

11. NFHS-4 revealed that 37 percent surveyed Indian men were of the opinion that contraception isn’t their business and it should be carried by women. 20 percent of the men also believed that women who use contraception may become licentious.

12. As per the reports of NCBI, the most common method of contraception in India is female sterilisation.
