Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is celebrating his 69th birthday on 10th July. Rajnath Singh is one of the important senior leaders in the BJP presently. He has been the president of Bharatiya Janata Party twice from 2005 to 2009 and from 2013 to 2014. Previously, he had held the office of Home Ministry in the first Modi regime during 2014-2019. He was also the Chief Minister for the state of Uttar Pradesh from October 2000 to March 2002.
Rajnath Singh is known as an amiable politician who has friends in all major political parties of India. During his stint at the Home Ministry, the government of India launched a major crackdown on the insurgents including the Maoists. Rajnath Singh is known for his exceptional Hindi oration skills.
Rajnath Singh’s portfolios during Atal Sarkar
During the Atal Vihari Vajpayee government, he held two important portfolios. First, he served as the Minister of Road Transport and Highways from November 1999 to October 2000. Later, during the period of May 2003 to May 2004, he was Minister of Agriculture.

Interesting things to know about Rajnath Singh
The Union defence minister was born on 10th July 1951 in a farmer family in the holy city of then Varanasi’s (Banaras) Babhora village. Singh has a masters degree in physics from the Gorakhpur University. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) at the age of 13 in 1964. Singh was with the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh even when he used to teach in the K.B. Post Graduate College at Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. Rajnath Singh started his political career as Organisational Secretary of the student wing ABVP’s (Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad) Gorakhpur division. Later in 1975, he was appointed as the District President of the Jana Sangh.
He was first elected as the Member of Legislative Assembly in 1977 from the Mirzapur constituency. During the 1991 BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, he was selected as the Education minister. His notable works during that tenure include Anti-Copying Act, 1992. This made copying a non-bailable offence. Singh is also credited for including Vedic mathematics in the syllabus and modernizing science texts.
