Nations that are giving major peace goals: International Peace Day 2022

Highlights:

  • Nations Giving Major Peace Goals
  • Countries that need some peace

This September, we observe International Peace Day 2022, also known as World Peace Day. Each year, International Peace Day is celebrated on September 21 around the world. In 1982, the First Day of Peace was celebrated. Until 2002, it was held on the 3rd Tuesday of September each year.

But, in 2001, it was decided that the International Day of Peace would be celebrated every year on September 21. And it will begin in the year 2002. Fixing a date for Peace Day, the assembly also declared that the day should be observed as a day of no violence and a global ceasefire.

The United Nations devoted itself to worldwide peace by creating World Peace Day. The UN also encouraged people to work in cooperation towards this goal.

A minute of silence at midday creates a “Peace Wave” across the planet to assure a good start.

Most countries have worked to recover from the global pandemic and ensure a better future for the planet and their citizens. This year’s theme is “End racism, build peace”.

In many western countries, an olive branch is used as a symbol of peace. The Greeks believed an olive branch brought abundance and kept the devil away.

Nations Giving Major Peace Goals

Iceland was ranked as the most peaceful country in the world in 2008. According to the Global Peace Index, it still proudly holds this title.

New Zealand is second on the list. Due to freedom of speech and expression, low levels of corruption and cooperative police keep on the list of the most peaceful countries.

Ireland has proudly secured 3rd position in the global peace Index due to its friendly and safe environment.

Denmark slips from the 3rd position to the fourth on the list. The country has low crime rates, free education, and access to universal healthcare. Here people have an overall sense of community.

Austria also makes a place at number five. This country performed well on many measures, such as social tensions, housing, income, jobs etc.

Countries that need some peace

Besides this, there are few countries severely in need of peace.

Afghanistan: Afghanistan has been in a civil war for over 2 decades with the Taliban. Afghanis are protesting against the newly formed government and battling for their rights daily.

SomaliaGoverned by anarchy, this place is a graveyard for foreign policy. In the past 2 decades, it had attained peace for only 6 months. Crimes like murder and kidnapping are pervasive in this state.

Yemen: This country is suffering from the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Almost 80% of the country’s population depends on aid for their survival, while most are on the brink of starvation.

Syria: Syria is one of the oldest cities in the world. Some states are flourishing here, while some are at war. Terrorism, kidnapping, conflict, civil unrest, and the risk of sudden detention are some attributes that make it dangerous to even visit.

Russia: Russia’s war with Ukraine makes it the 4th least peaceful country in the world.

Where does India stand?

India ranks 135th on the list of most peaceful countries. This means that we still need to work on our peace index. The prevailing regional and casteist conflicts are the primary source of unrest in the country.

Nations worldwide struggle with various problems like poverty, diseases, poor healthcare system, and lack of education.

Therefore, International Peace Day 2022 reminds us and teaches us that regardless of what languages we speak and where we come from, we are more alike when we are different.
