Chennai Rains: Important updates and helpline numbers that you must know
Chennai received 20 CM of rain on Sunday highest since 2015 which led to all-around waterlogging. The authorities have now issued an order to keep the schools shut for the next two days. The relief work is under its way. Meanwhile, IMD has predicted that 14 Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai, Vellore, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, among others can receive heavy to very heavy rainfall today. Notably, most of the government offices will also remain shut today.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has appealed to private firms to declare a holiday or allow employees to work from home. Talking about Tamil Nadu, 4 NDRF teams have been deployed in Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Madurai. Apart from it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and has assured all possible help in rescue and relief work.
Let us understand why Chennai is receiving a lot of rain during this season?
According to data, Chennai has received the highest rainfall since 2015. But what is the reason behind receiving a lot of rain during this season? Notably, the main reason behind this remains the Northeast Monsoon, which rains during October- December. It is the Northeast monsoon which is also known as the primary monsoon of Tamil Nadu. Notably, it brings sufficient rains to the state when all other states depend on South West Monsoon for rains that sets in May, June and July.
After a prolonged Summer, the Southwest monsoon helps Tamil Nadu to maintain groundwater levels, it’s the Northeast monsoon that elevates the level. The IMD has predicted a likely formation of low pressure over the Bay of Bengal moving towards the northern Tamil Nadu coast with Moderate rain in the coming days ahead of the formation of the low pressure.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has launched 24*7 helpline to report waterlogging and flooding. Residents can call on 044-25384520 or you can WhatsApp on 9445477205, which operates from Ripon Buildings control room, said Commissioner G Prakash, in a statement on Sunday.
As a part to stay prepared, the civic body has kept boats 109 to rescue people during the floods. Notably for accommodating affected people, 176 community halls and four common halls to cook for 1500 people are kept ready.
