Gaza’s Looming Fuel Crisis Threatens Lives and Vital Services

Gaza's fuel shortage jeopardises vital services. International action is needed.

Gaza’s Fuel Shortage: Humanitarian Implications

Nearly three weeks after a Hamas attack on Israel and the subsequent Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, the region faces a critical shortage of life-saving resources, especially fuel. This article delves into the reasons behind the fuel shortage in Gaza and its consequences for the Palestinian population.

The Gaza Strip’s Geopolitical Situation

Gaza, a narrow strip of land along the Mediterranean Sea between Israel and Egypt, has been under an Israeli blockade since 2007 when Hamas took control of the territory. With a population of around 2.3 million people, Gaza relies heavily on Israel for essentials like drinking water, food, electricity, and fuel for its power plant.

The Impact of the Israeli Blockade

Israeli authorities initiated measures to limit the distribution of electricity and fuel to Gaza, citing their use by the Hamas regime. Additionally, the ongoing conflict between Hamas and the Palestinian Authority, which governs the West Bank, has worsened the energy crisis in Gaza.

Recent Escalation

Following a terrorist attack by Hamas and subsequent Israeli airstrikes that resulted in casualties, Israel tightened the blockade, restricting the entry of essential resources into Gaza.

Humanitarian Aid and Fuel Scarcity

While humanitarian aid recently entered Gaza, little fuel has been permitted. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned that without fuel, they couldn’t continue their operations in Gaza. Fuel is vital for hospitals, power, and water purification.

Healthcare Under Threat

The World Health Organization reported that a third of Gaza’s hospitals were non-functional due to the fuel shortage, putting the lives of vulnerable patients at risk. These patients include those on dialysis, premature babies, and those in intensive care or needing surgery.

Israel’s Concerns and Claims

The Israel Defense Forces expressed concerns that providing fuel could enable Hamas to continue violence. They claimed Hamas had stockpiled fuel, though this claim remains unverified.
