The iconic Indian actress, Waheeda Rehman, has been named as the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honour in Indian cinema. Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, announced on September 26, recognizing Rehman’s remarkable contributions to the world of film.

Waheeda Rehman is widely regarded as one of India’s finest actors, celebrated for her unforgettable performances in cinematic classics such as “Pyaasa,” “CID,” “Guide,” “Kaagaz Ke Phool,” “Khamoshi,” and “Trishul.” Her enduring legacy has left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry.

Minister Anurag Thakur expressed his elation and deep respect in unveiling this prestigious honour for the 85-year-old luminary. He lauded her stellar and longstanding involvement in the film industry. He also noted the recent passage of the Women’s Reservation Bill, underscoring the significance of presenting this esteemed award to a cinematic legend like Waheeda Rehman.

In his congratulatory message to the veteran star, Thakur acknowledged her extensive body of work, emphasizing its intrinsic importance in India’s cinematic history. Waheeda Rehman’s illustrious journey commenced in 1955 with her debut in Telugu cinema, featuring in films like “Rojulu Maraayi” and “Jayasimha.” Her Hindi film career took flight in 1956 with “CID,” where she shared the screen with the legendary Dev Anand.

Over a career spanning more than five decades, Waheeda Rehman has graced the silver screen in over 90 films across various languages.
