Over decades of movies has formed its own typecast in Bollywood but every now and then, a film comes along to break this mold and give us a refreshing new look at the amazing character of being a single mother. Being a mum is definitely a tough role and doing it alone can be challenging. We have seen single mothers in Hindi films in a variety of avatars – some stereotypical, and others full, rounded personalities. But every character that portraits the role of a mother always teaches us a lesson.

So let’s take a look at the Bollywood movies that gave us an honest look at the life of a single mother

1. Mother India: An age-old classic, this iconic film managed to show us the real struggle of a single mother way before it’s time. Mehboob Khan gave us Nargis as the ever sacrificing mother who gives the best for two sons amid extreme hardship and poverty.

2. Kal Ho Na Ho:A widowed mother of three who is raising her kids in a foreign country, Jaya Bachchan shows us the grit of a single mother in this iconic Bollywood film. She manages her own cafe in New York and is always there for her daughter Naina, more as a friend than mother.

3. Nil Battey Sannata

Swara Bhaskar blew us away with a brilliant performance in this heart-wrenching movie. The housemaid name Chanda who is a single mother with high school education. She chooses to chase her passion while also encouraging her daughter to do the best.

4. Jaane Tu….Ya Jaane Na

A film that resonated with millennial featured Ratna Pathak Shah as a cool and super supporter mom. Always standing by what’s best for a child Jai (Imran Khan), she is not only hilarious but pretty darn adorable too.

5. Paa

The film Paa is about the child (Auro) with the rare genetic disorder. Vidya Balan plays the role of Auto’s mother and soon becomes a vital element in this heartwarming film with her drive and unconditional love for her son.
