Better Late than Never. Bong Joon-ho’s winning the Oscars was absolutely that kind of a moment. It was for the first time, a Korean film was given recognition at The Oscars and that was definitely the moment from where people started to acknowledge the beauty of Korean films, more than ever before. In fact, there are so many people and critics, who say that Parasite is not the best film Bong Joon-ho has made, but his films have been either ahead of times or not have been giving the consideration they deserved. But better late than never, in the Oscars 2020, it received the honour it deserved, and so did Bong Joon-ho. And since then, the viewership of K-pop has been ever increasing. 1. Okja

Mija has been the caretaker and loyal companion of Okja – a giant animal and an even bigger friend – at her home in the mountains of South Korea for ten idyllic years. But sadly, that changes. Mirando Corporation, a family-owned empire adopts Okja and transfers her to New York where the CEO is a narcissistic person who ambitions for Mija’s dearest friend. Okja is one of Bong Joon-ho’s finest. And the other films that go without saying in this section can be Snowpiercer and The Host.

2. The Handmaiden

A film that is as good as it gets. A Korean con man (Ha Jung-woo) devises an intricate scheme to seduce and bilk a Japanese woman (Kim Min-hee) out of her inheritance with the aid of an orphaned pickpocket (Kim Tae-ri) is the logline of his film, The Handmaiden. Based on a British Novel from the Victoria Era, written by Sarah Walters, the film is a little too explicit but worth watching.

3. The President’s Last Bang

A complete South Korean of the late 1970s that is truly one of a kind. Since we are looking for films that draw parallels with Parasite, there can’t be a better example than ‘The President’s Last Bang’. The class divide plot is so well knitted in this film that there is so much to offer. Here, Park Chung-hee (Song Jae-ho) enjoys a lavish lifestyle. Chung is well-insulated from his people and lives in opulent surroundings, where he feasts on the finest foods and is continuously surrounded by ladies. When the disillusioned leader of the South Korean secret service, Kim Jae-kyu (Suk-kyu Han), discovers that he has a fatal illness, he tries to kill Chung-hee. The film is directed by Im Sang-soo.

4. I am a Cyborg, But That’s Okay

The name of this film appears to be really interesting to me, ‘I am a Cyborg, But That’s Okay.’ Cyborg refers to a fictional character with physical abilities extended beyond normal human limitations. Here, the character, Young-goon works in a job of making transistor radios, and her flip side is that she is a cyborg who only needs to lick batteries she is then sent to a psychiatric ward and events turn afterwards.

5. A Tale of two sisters

A Tale of two sisters is absolutely an overwhelming yet interesting film directed by Kim Jee-woon. The film is about two sisters who are returning from mental health facility and realizing that not they don’t just have to deal with their stepmother but also the ghost of their late mother that has started to haunt them.
