In a heart-wrenching incident that shook the town, an illegal Dhanbad mine collapsed, claiming the lives of two people and leaving several others trapped under the rubble. The tragic event unfolded at the Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) mine in Kapasara, Mugma. The mine had been closed for five months, but illegal mining activities persisted, ultimately leading to this catastrophe.

On Monday morning, a part of the mine’s roof caved in, resulting in the loss of two lives. The victims, identified as Yamuna Rajvanshi and Tapas Das, were residents of the area. The bodies of these miners were retrieved by residents, highlighting the dire need for safety measures in such areas.

The Current Situation

As the news of the accident spread, a sense of urgency enveloped the region. Approximately a dozen individuals are believed to be still trapped in the mine. Disturbingly, no ECL officials have visited the site as of yet. However, the ECL is dispatching JCB equipment to aid in earth-filling operations near the collapsed mine.

Community Outcry

The community is understandably distressed and holds the ECL responsible for this tragedy. Residents are furious, blaming the ECL for not taking adequate precautions to prevent illegal miners from accessing the site. Security measures, such as walls or barbed wire fencing, were conspicuously absent, leaving the mine vulnerable to illegal operations.

Political Response

Political figures, including BJP politician Pradeep Bauri and JMM leader Lakhi Devi, visited the scene and voiced their concerns. They emphasised that such incidents occur too frequently, urging the ECL management to prioritise safety measures and deter illegal mining activities.

The Dhanbad mine collapse serves as a tragic reminder of the risks associated with illegal coal mining operations. It underscores the need for strict safety measures and increased vigilance to prevent such devastating incidents from recurring. It is a stark wake-up call to both authorities and the community to work together to safeguard the lives of those involved in these hazardous activities.
