PM Modi Reviews Bangalore Suburban Rail Project and Telangana Irrigation Scheme, Calls for Faster Execution
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for faster execution of long-pending infrastructure projects after reviewing two major developments in opposition-ruled states during a recent PRAGATI meeting. The projects under review included the Bangalore Suburban Railway Project in Karnataka and the J Chokka Rao Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme in Telangana — both of which have faced prolonged delays and significant cost escalations.
The high-level review meeting was held on December 31, 2025, where the Prime Minister emphasized the need for timely completion and improved coordination between central and state authorities. According to official sources, PM Modi expressed concern over how long these critical projects have remained unfinished despite their economic and social importance.
Bangalore Suburban Railway Project: Decades in the Making
The PM Modi Reviews Bangalore Suburban Rail Project comes amid growing public frustration over delays. The project has been discussed for nearly four decades and was finally sanctioned in 2020. Initially targeted for completion by 2023, it remains far from operational.
The suburban rail network is designed to address one of Bengaluru’s biggest challenges — daily traffic congestion and poor airport connectivity. Once completed, the project will span nearly 148 kilometers, covering four major corridors that connect the city, its suburbs, and the Kempegowda International Airport.
For millions of commuters, especially those traveling long distances daily, the project promises faster, safer, and more affordable transportation. Officials estimate that the suburban rail system will cater to nearly 10 lakh passengers every day, significantly easing pressure on roads.

Rising Costs and Missed Deadlines
One of the major concerns highlighted during the review was the steep escalation in project cost. The Bangalore Suburban Railway Project’s budget has increased by approximately Rs 1,020 crore, rising from Rs 15,767 crore to Rs 16,876 crore.
The Prime Minister had laid the foundation stone for the project in 2023, setting a 40-month deadline for completion. However, land acquisition issues, coordination challenges, and administrative delays have slowed progress.
PM Modi reportedly stressed that such cost overruns not only burden public finances but also delay benefits to citizens who rely on modern infrastructure for daily life.
Telangana’s Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme Under Review
Alongside the rail project, the Prime Minister also reviewed the J Chokka Rao Devadula Lift Irrigation Scheme in Telangana — one of the largest irrigation projects in Asia.
The scheme was originally conceived in 2001, during the tenure of the then chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh. Its primary objective is to provide irrigation water to 5.57 lakh acres of farmland across Warangal, Karimnagar, and Nalgonda districts.
Despite its scale and importance, the project has faced repeated delays over the years. It is now targeted for completion by 2027. Once operational, it is expected to transform agricultural productivity in drought-prone regions and provide long-term water security.
Focus on Accountability and Timely Delivery
During the PRAGATI meeting, PM Modi reportedly urged state governments to remove bottlenecks, improve inter-departmental coordination, and ensure accountability at every level. The emphasis was on execution rather than announcements.
The review of projects in Karnataka and Telangana reflects the Centre’s broader push to accelerate infrastructure development across the country, regardless of political differences. Officials noted that the Prime Minister’s focus remains on public benefit, economic growth, and efficient governance.
Why These Projects Matter
Both projects have far-reaching implications. The Bangalore Suburban Railway Project can redefine urban mobility in one of India’s fastest-growing cities, while the Telangana irrigation scheme can secure livelihoods for thousands of farmers.
Delays not only increase costs but also postpone economic gains, job creation, and quality-of-life improvements. The PM Modi Reviews Bangalore Suburban Rail Project meeting underlined the urgency of translating plans into reality.

The Road Ahead
With clear directions from the Prime Minister, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether these projects finally gain momentum. Citizens, commuters, and farmers alike will be watching closely to see if deadlines are met and promises fulfilled.
As India continues to invest heavily in infrastructure, timely execution remains the key challenge — and the true test of governance.
