No-Confidence Motion Debate: Rahul Gandhi Pushes for PM’s Response on Manipur Amidst Parliamentary Session Dominance

Rahul Gandhi is set to initiate a debate on a No-Confidence Motion against the Modi government, although Prime Minister Modi won’t be present. The BJP is convening a parliamentary meeting before the motion is discussed, debated, and voted on over the next two days.

Opposition Pressures PM on Manipur:

While the motion is unlikely to pass, it serves as a way for the opposition to push the PM to address the turmoil in Manipur that has dominated the current parliamentary session. The opposition has been pushing for this discussion, but the government insists that the PM won’t address the issue. Five ministers including Amit Shah and Nirmala Sitharaman will contribute to the debate, along with other BJP MPs. 

No-confidence motion:

The government argues that no precedent exists for the PM’s statement on such matters. The opposition, however, stresses the urgency due to recent violence. In a related context, Home Minister Amit Shah challenged the opposition to engage in the Manipur debate instead of avoiding it. In 2018, PM Modi survived a no-confidence motion with a large majority. This time, the NDA coalition, supported by other parties, holds a strong majority against the opposition.
