Muslim League is a secular party, says Rahul Gandhi; BJP, Congress trade charges

Rahul Gandhi calls Muslim League is a secular party and faces strong backlash and opposition from BJP and others.

Is Muslim League is a secular party? Rahul Gandhi Says Yes

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is known for his statements that always attract a lot of controversy. His latest statement calling the Muslim League a secular party has not been received well by many sections of society, including the ruling party BJP.

In an interaction at Washington DC National Press Club, Gandhi was asked- “You talked about secularism in democracy. You are opposing the Hindu party BJP. However, the Congress in Kerala has been in an alliance with Muslim party Muslim League in Kerala, the state from which you are, you were MP, sorry.”

Answering this question, Rahul Gandhi answered-

“Muslim League is a completely secular party. There is nothing non-secular about Muslim League. I think the person (who sent the question) has studied the Muslim League.”

Replies for the statement

In response to this statement,  All India Imam Association president Sajid Rashidi said- “Rahul Gandhi’s statement that the Muslim League is a secular party is based on his party’s experience. We look at it with great responsibility. The Muslim League’s close relationship with Congress dates back to the days of Indira Gandhi.”

However, the statement was met with strong backlash from BJP.

Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister for Earth Science said- “Jinnah’s Muslim League is a secular party? The party responsible for India’s partition on religious lines a secular party? Extremely unfortunate that some people in India still consider the person who supports the Muslim League as secular!”

He further added- “I don’t understand why he hates PM Modi so much and speaks against the country. He should know that this country gave his family everything, the common man can’t even imagine. Rahul Gandhi is unable to tolerate that a common man became the PM of the country. His language and the manner in which he speaks are not taken seriously by anyone.”

As many other leaders also pointed out how Rahul Gandhi calling Muslim League a secular party was factually incorrect, it was also noted that Gandhi made this comment due to vote bank politics.

Congress jumped into Gandhi’s defense and said that the party in mention- IUMl (Indian Union Muslim League) was actually secular and not a remnant of Jinnah’s Muslim League.
