In an interview with news agency ANI, Prakash elaborated on the distinctions between the Nehru museum and the Prime Ministers’ museum. He noted that a visit to the former Nehru museum would provide insight into how the Nehru-Gandhi family, which had managed the institution for an extended period. Reflecting on this would reveal the type of portrayal they had constructed for Nehru ji, Prakash asserted.

Congress Criticizes Modi’s Nehru Legacy Actions:

Prakash’s response came in the wake of strong criticism from Congress leaders and members, who accused Prime Minister Modi of attempting to undermine the Nehruvian legacy through actions like renaming the institution. This criticism was encapsulated by the statement that Modi’s agenda involves denying, distorting, defaming, and destroying the Nehruvian legacy.

In mid-June, during a special meeting of the NMML Society, the decision was made to change the institution’s name to PMML Society. Prakash emphasized that visiting the Nehru museum now offers a comprehensive view of Nehru’s legacy. The museum showcases Nehru’s contributions, such as his role in the establishment of institutes of technology, the development of major infrastructure projects like the Hirakud Dam and Nagarjuna Sagar Dam, and his leadership of the Planning Commission during his 17-year tenure as Prime Minister.

Prakash invited anyone with doubts to visit the museum and witness firsthand how the transition has been managed. He highlighted that the museum now features Teen Murti Bhavan, where Nehru’s legacy is depicted in the context of modern India and its progress.

Renaming decision:

The renaming decision had previously sparked strong reactions from the Congress party, considering the historical significance of Teen Murti Bhavan as the former residence of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Despite this change, Prakash emphasized that the museum offers a comprehensive portrayal of Nehru’s legacy, showcasing his contributions and inspiring pride in his achievements.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh expressed his criticism on Twitter, stating that the iconic institution, Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML), has now become PMML—Prime Ministers’ Memorial Museum and Library. He accused Prime Minister Modi of attempting to undermine Nehru’s legacy and contributions.

Legacy would persist:

Ramesh asserted that despite Modi’s attempts to erase and distort Nehru’s contributions, his legacy would persist. He emphasized Nehru’s monumental role in India’s freedom movement and his efforts in shaping the democratic, secular, scientific, and liberal foundations of the nation-state. Ramesh criticized Modi’s actions as an assault on these foundations, describing the renaming as an act of pettiness and peeve.

Ramesh concluded by expressing confidence that Nehru’s legacy would continue to inspire generations despite the ongoing assault on his contributions. The controversy surrounding the renaming reflects the enduring impact of historical figures on contemporary politics and the differing interpretations of their legacies.
