Maharashtra: FIR Against Nanded Hospital Dean & Doctors Sparks Concerns Over Healthcare Accountability Amid Patient Deaths

 

A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been filed against the dean of a government-run medical college and hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra, following the reported deaths of 31 patients within 72 hours. The FIR, naming acting dean Dr SR Wakode and another doctor, was lodged by a relative of a newborn who died at the hospital. A conviction for culpable homicide not amounting to murder can lead to a jail term of up to 10 years.

The complainant alleges that the newborn’s death resulted from the negligence of the dean and the child specialist. According to the complaint, the family purchased medicines from outside the hospital and waited for medical attention, but no doctor attended to the newborn. When they sought help from the dean’s office, they were reportedly turned away.

 

MP’s Hospital Toilet Act

This incident occurred shortly after the dean had filed a police complaint against an MP from the ruling Shiv Sena party. The MP, Hemant Patil, had visited the Dr. Shankarrao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital and made the dean clean a filthy toilet on Tuesday. Patil expressed concern about the unsanitary conditions at the hospital, including toilets that had not been cleaned for months and a lack of water.

 

In response to the dean’s complaint, Patil was charged with offences including criminal force to deter a public servant from performing their duty, defamation, and criminal intimidation. He was also charged under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The hospital’s dean claimed that Patil’s actions had raised his blood pressure levels.

 

Viral Toilet Cleaning Sparks Debate

Video footage of the dean cleaning the toilets at Patil’s instruction went viral, sparking mixed reactions on social media. Some users supported the MP for taking action against the dean, while others believed the local administration was using diversion tactics to avoid responsibility for the hospital’s poor condition.

Hygiene Concerns and Medicine Shortages

Concerns about hygiene at the hospital were further raised when visuals of pigs roaming around the hospital premises emerged. The Eknath Shinde government denied any shortage of medicine and doctors at the hospital. However, patients’ relatives alleged that senior doctors were unavailable, and junior doctors were attending to patients. They also claimed that medicines were not available at the hospital, and patients’ families were instructed to procure them from external sources.

 

The situation in Nanded highlights the challenges and controversies surrounding healthcare facilities in India, particularly government-run hospitals. The incident has brought attention to issues of cleanliness, hygiene, access to medical care, and accountability within the healthcare system. Investigations into the deaths and the overall state of the hospital are ongoing, as authorities seek to address the concerns raised by both patients’ families and government officials.
